In April 2000 I left my job and decided to turn what had been a hobby for the previous few years into a business venture. Here I am 15 years later — and I have you to thank for it!
This is how it all started, actually, 22 years ago
… I was about to complete my Peace Corps Service in Nepal and one of my Nepali friends says: “Aaron, we should start an import/ export business.”
Me: “Nah, that’s not my thing.”
Him: “It will be great, take all these carpets, Gorkha Knives, wooden ties, jewelry and random trinkets back to America with you and pretty soon we’ll both be rich beyond our wildest dreams!”
Turns out after lugging a 200 pound duffle bag halfway around the globe, the only thing I could really sell was the jewelry. My little ‘side-business’ did ok and helped put me through grad school but I had no intention of making a living at it til I lost my job in 2000. Over the next few years I got 2 key pieces of advice from unlikely sources.
My brother in law says, “Hey, why not try selling that stuff on eBay.” At the time there were very few jewelry sellers (imagine?!).
A few years later my brother says, “Why not advertise on Google?” The advice turned out to be pretty good! And so as the digital marketplace grew, and eBay and Google took over the world, I was well positioned to move along with the flow.
I feel very fortunate to still be doing this today and want to take a minute and thank you and all my customers for making this possible. In return, I hope I have been, and will continue to be, a loyal and insightful trading partner.
Thanks again and I look forward to another 15 years of serving your jewelry needs!
