Marketing Wholesale Jewelry In A Weak Economy

July 18, 2008 – 7:50 am

Let’s get the bad news out of the way. The economy sucks. There I said it!  Now the good news as it relates to your business. There is opportunity - and I will be very specific. Although I am a wholesaler and you are a retailer, our businesses are very similar in many ways. Even though I have been wholesaleing for 14 years, there is still plenty of market share for me to grab. Why such opportunity? Because compared to the Blake Brothers and Blue Ice’s of the world, my business is small potatoes.  While these larger companies may be experiencing losses during a recession, because they have maxed out every marketing resource, there is still room for little guys like us to grow and expand. You see, there are still many strategies that I have not yet employed, marketing channels I have not explored and customers who I have not reached yet. Some of this content may be a repeat, but the information is very relevant still so I thought I would recycle some of it.

Wholesale Jewelry Closeouts

July 15, 2008 – 9:23 am

As you know (I hope!) I have great values on the website everyday. But because of the nature of the jewellery industry, some of the best bargains take some time to locate. I just went through the entire site and picked out the best values, and put all these products on the New Arrivals page.  There are about 150-200 great products you can see and order very efficiently. Many of the items are only $5-$7.

Let me explain just a bit more why I have done this. Silver has been a very volatile commodity for the past 2 years. For obvious reasons I have to base my prices on the cost of silver at the time I purchase it to make the jewellery. Sometimes I have to buy silver when it is high and sometimes I buy when it is lower.  One thing that I do NOT do is automatically markup al my prices the minute silver prices go up. So, you will see price fluctuations on the site of up to 25% for similar designs. If I wanted to be consistent I would bring up the lower prices, but I don’t do that. So believe it or not you can find some unbelievable dealls on the site every single day, right in front of you. The catch now is that I have made it easier to find today’s best values so if you have time take a look today before the vultures swoop in!

$150 Wholesale Jewelry Giveaway! (And support a great cause)

July 8, 2008 – 6:40 am

This one is rather odd and you may have to re-read it a few times before it makes sense! It’s past my bed time so I am not sure how coherent this will be. True to my procrastinative tendencies I waited til the last minute to think of this…

CLICK HERE TO SPONSOR ME/ GUESS TIME

On Sunday, July 13, I will be competing in a 1/2 Ironman Triathlon in Rhode Island. It consists of 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run, and a whole lot of pain. I figure if I am going to suffer it might as well benefit someone else besides me (the thing about Triathletes is even though we complain about the misery but we really do love it).

So I am providing my customers an opportunity to sponsor me while possibly winning $150 in jewelry (wholesale value!)to boot. I will forward 100% of donations to Friends of Nepal, which in turn will support some great projects in Nepal like the ones described on my website. And the jewellery? For every $5 you donate, you get one guess at my finishing time. I anticipate finishing the race in the range of 4 hours 30 minute to 5 hours. So if you donate $10 you get 2 guesses. Whoever guesses closest wins*. Tie=split (hint: guess to the ’seconds’). Send your guesses in the comments section when you donate or just email to me seperately.

How To Take Great Pictures of Your Silver Jewelry

June 27, 2008 – 12:50 pm

Here are the key points in a nutshell:

  • Get a good camera and learn how to use it properly
  • Setup a lighting system
  • Find the right perspective
  • Get a few key materials to facilitate the process
  • Develop a system to process the photos efficiently

1) CAMERA-

I prefer Canon cameras. They have the best optics on the market, even in the low end models. But of course there are other good brands. If getting a new camera, consider a Canon. I use a Canon G5, which you can get for about $175 used on ebay or $500 new. At a MINIMUM, you need a camera with a good “macro” mode. This is simply a button you press on most cameras that allows you to zoom in very close and still maintain focus. In natural light, you can usually use macro in the AUTO mode in most dig cameras and get very good results. Consider a wide angle/ macro lens if you have a Canon G5, G7 or another brand with interchangeable lenses. I got my extra lens for about $100, now you can probably find for $50 or less. For my camera, the way I take 99% of my pics (using light box) is to put the camera in Manual mode and adjust the aperature value (AV). The lower the value the more light in (this is because the lens stays open longer). For example AV of 1 means the lens stays open 1 second (LONG TIME!). 1/10 = 1 tenth of a sentence. 1/400 = 400th of one second, etc. I usually use an AV of between 200-400 (with light box) then use manual focus.

2) LIGHTING -

You can get a great light box for about $300-$400. Here is the one I use:

http://easyproductphotography.com/products/gem-eBox-photo-light-box.html

Sometimes you can also find them on ebay for less.

If you are on a budget (who isn’t!) you can make your own light box for about $5 or less. This is just one way you can do it. Once you get your box made, use some 100 watt lights (you can get some pretty simple ones at Home Depot for about $5-$10 each - you will need three - get the kind that have clamps so you can move them around easily)

http://photodoto.com/create-your-own-light-box/

You can also try natural lighting. But don’t take pics in direct sunlight! Way too bright. Do it in the shade. But my preference is light box.

3) PERSPECTIVE-

many overlook this and this is where the art lies. There are many sellers who go out and get a great camera and a fancy light box and still take crappy pics!  Take your pics from a perspective that highlights the best aspect of the item you are shooting. If it’s the gemstone, then focus on the stone, if its the filigree (which by the way, photographs VERY well) focus on that. Get the lens as close as possible then zoom in as far as possible while maintaining crisp lines. Put the lens on the same level or even a little lower than the item being phographed. Don’t aim straight down or too far away,  see the examples below. Which do you like best?

taken from close range, angle       taken from top, straight down        AV=400

White background Auto         White Background Manual Focus, AV=400

4) MATERIALS -

Dentl wax, believe it or not is very handy! Clear wax material enables you to get the rings or pendants to stand up on their own. Background is super important. I personally do not like white - looks to sanitized. You want your lighting structure white… I mean the material the items are placed on… experiment with different materials and textures. I like slate because it works nicely with light - absords, not reflective. Easy material to take pics on. When you get good you can try shiny material like the black tiles I use. You will have to experiment with your camera settings (most notably AV) to get this right.

Shale/ slate background

Macro/ Wide Angle Lens for Canon G5

5) PROCESSING -

What do you do with the pics? There are many ways to handle this. I will tell you my method as an example. First I open the pics individually in photoshop. I have an old version. I simply crop the photos really close to the item in pic. Keep the dimensions around the same for all pics that will be displayed together. I mean, you want all squares or all rectangles, not a combo because they will not look good together on the website. Next I use Atalsoft Eyebatch Software: http://www.atalasoft.com/eyebatch/ to batch process the pics. If I have 50 pics, I process them all in about 20 seconds. I make thumbs, then I make larger images around 375 pixels. Now you have a thumbnail (100-200 pixels is best) and a larger size pic that look great and are very small size which is good for websites, ebay, etc.

This is just some info to help get you started or improve what you already know. In fact your techniques may be better than mine! But I hope there is something in here that will be of use to you.

Have a great weekend and be sure to see our New Arrivals - lots of new stuff added in the past week.Â

Wholesale Jewelry Buy Back Program

June 27, 2008 – 12:49 pm

I want to address two pressing issues in this post:1) Jewellery Buy-Back Program

2) How to take great jewellery pics

JEWELLERY BUY BACK

Regardless of how successful you are, there are always a certain amount of your investment that stayed tied up in inventory. Either you have been selling for several years and have collected certain items that may be out of style or you just cannot sell. And in some cases I have customers that start a jewellery business on a whim and 6 months later realize it is not what the expected. In both these cases, one is likely to have accumulated excess quantities of products that they do not want.

It is for this reason I am starting a Buy-Back program. This will allow you to send your jewellery to me and I will buy it back. This helps take some of the worry and risk out of folks starting a new business and a simple way to clear out old stock for those who have been doing this for a while. Here are the terms for the program:

1) I will accept only items that you have bought from me.

2) Products returned must be “un-worn” and preferably in original packaging.

3) Products that have tarnished must be polished before being sent back and be in original condition.

4) There is no cut off order date.

5) Only jewellery products is eligible for this program.

6) Buy back rate will be on a per grm basis and will fluctuate with the market rate of silver. You must contact me prior to returning the products to learn the current rate. As of June 27, the buy-back rate is $.75/ grm.

7) All payments I make will be through paypal.

8) I am not responsible for items damaged during shipping back to me. I advise you get delivery confirmation and ins. for large quantities.

If the program becomes popular I will develop a better system, but for now if you want to return something just alert me via email first to let me know the condition and quantity of the jewellery being sent back. And when you send it back include a note stating you want sell the jewellery back to me as part of the Buy-Back Program. Be sure to include your paypal email address.

Free Rainbow Moonstone Silver Studs - 24 Hours ONLY!

June 25, 2008 – 9:03 am

I am giving away a $5 (wholesale price) pair of beautiful Rainbow Moonstone & Sterling Silver studs with every order of $75 or more. This promo will last 24 hours (aprox 9am  EST Thursday June 26) or until the 30 pairs I have in stock are gone.  Why am I doing this? UGGH! For the past week my server has been sluggish, which I feel really bad about. Its like having to shut down your store for 5 days; not good for business! This is my way of saying I am SORRY if I let you down - if you tried to get to the site and were unable to access it. Anyway, the problem is now solved and I will be personally monitoring it all day to be sure there are no more issues. If you have any difficulties on the site let me know - you can reach me at 401-709-4420 (001 country code for outside USA).

In the past few days I have added some gorgeous new low price-point silver gemstone rings ($5-$7 wholesale) as well as a few earrings and the very popular white shell pendants. And be sure to view our Himalayan Crafts category. This stuff is FUN! Enjoy!

Buddhist Prayer Flags, Himalayan Incense, Purses, Thangkas !!

June 17, 2008 – 8:33 am

To say this has been a long time coming is an understatement. I have been debating whether to add some high quality, low price-point handicraft products to the site
for 7 years! I am starting off with a limited number of offerings - all from Nepal. These are some exciting, beautiful and unique items that will add diversity and some
volume to your displays. The crafts include incense, small bags/ purses, Tibetan Buddhist Prayer Flags, and some amazing Buddhist Artwork. The prices are amazing too. Let me know what you think.

Cotton Purses ($3.99)

Prayer Flags ($7.99)

Himalayan Incense ($2.25/ pack of 15 sticks)

Bhuddist Paintings ($18-$50)

Also see our new arrivals page for some of our newest jewelry additions. The category with the most new items is the Pendants $. TONS of new stuff were added last week.

New Arrivals

One more thing. Once in a while my artisans send me an item that just WOWs! Me. I got this awesome set of silver-leaf earrings yesterday and I absolutely love them. They are not the most unusual design, but just so distinctive and well-made; These will be a hit. I have 30 pairs only in stock now. You can see them on the New Arrivals page or the Earrings $$ Category. They are $11.99.

New Summer Line In Stock

June 10, 2008 – 11:33 am

I have added some stunning new low cost & fun Summer Items to the website. These are made in Thailand, from natural shells and cocunut shells. Many of the shell designs are mixed with resin to create a shiny, smooth finish. These new necklaces are pretty large and around $9-$11 wholesale. I only have 30 of each design so check them out quick to see if there is anything you like. I also have a bunch of new toe rings in the same category.

New Baltic Amber & Artisan Jewelry

May 23, 2008 – 10:33 am

just finished updating the website again, with some stunning new sterling silver baltic amber pendants. I added about 50 new designs. Some only have a handful in stock. I contracted the artisans to make some bigger settings set with larger amber in cognac, lemon, green and yellow tones. All the amber is native to the Baltic region where the jewelrry is made and the quality of the gems is very, very good. I was hoping to get the rings, earring and necklaces up too, but did not have time - just way to many designs. But take a look now and then I will alert you early next week when I have time to put the rest up.

Tips - Resources, Networking, SEO & More

May 14, 2008 – 10:46 am

Over the years I have accumulated a handful of quality partnerships that I would like to share with you. I have also included some useful info for those of you with websites looking for some guidance on generating traffic, as well as some buying tips- whether its from us or other suppliers.

Jewelry Business Resources

If you need low cost wholesale supplies such as bags, boxes or shipping materials, www.Fetpak.com is the company I use for all these items. They have great prices and shipping is very quick. Not sure if they ship Int’l.

For standard jewellry findings, sizing tools, crafting tools & suppliers, silver wire, etc. I reccomend www.jewelrysupply.com.

In need of new suppliers? Don’t worry, I take personally not! Whether you sell jewellry exlusively or other products as well, its always a good idea to diversify your offerings. These two sites I am familiar Read the rest of this entry »

HUGE Museum Quality Tibetan Pieces Available For Custom Orders

May 14, 2008 – 8:54 am

This is kind of niche, but if you have customers interested in stunning, authentic, high-end Tibetan jewelry then read on.

This jewelry normally retails for $800-$1000 per piece. Very expensive, very sought after and unique.  I am marketing this line differently. An experiment. I am having each piece custom made. The pics on the site are not great but give you a good idea about the designs and quality. I have reduced my normal markup drastically so even though the pieces are expensive, the value is excellent for this type of jewellry. Even if you went to Nepal yourself you would would not be able to buy these at a wholesale price.

Because of the high cost of these, Read the rest of this entry »
