I have met many Tibetans and have witnessed their plight as refugees first hand when I lived and worked in Nepal. The communist regime in China has persecuted and turtored Tibetans for decades and this is a primary reason I have never, and probably will never, do business with China. For me (everyone has their own definition - and I respect that) “Fair Trade” means NOT trading with china. I apologize for the disturbance, I try not to mix business and politics but in this case the line is blurry and I know many of my customers are atuned to this issue.

Virtual Website Available For Existing Customers

March 12, 2008 – 5:34 pm

I will be launching a new feature on the website, based on feedback I have been hearing for a number of years. The Virtual Website is intened to be used as a way to increase your sales of our products.  Through this free service you will have a semi-customizeable virtual site hosted on one of my under-the-radar websites - this is so your customers will have no clue that I am your source. I have no interest in attracting any retail business! This is just another way that I am working to support my customers. To see the Beta version (fully functional version out next week), login to the My Account tab and click the Virtual Website link on left side of page. I think you will really enjoy this!

Children Going to School Thanks To Our Customers!

March 11, 2008 – 8:34 am

One of my resolutions - well not really a resolution, but something I have been planning for  a while - is to continue to build a socially resonsible business. We took a huge step a couple weeks back and put the final touches on a sponsorship program that will enable 14 children to attend school in Nepal.

10 of the participants are children of the workers who make our beautiful jewelry.  The other 4 are being sponsored through www.Edwon.org. The political and economic situation in Nepal is currently not very good.  The fact that Wholesalegemshop.com is providing consistent work for 20-40 workers in Nepal is a huge help in its own right. But I wanted to do more. After over a year of discussions with my business partners in Nepal, site visits and collaboration with experienced development workers in Kathmandu, we established the program.

The children will receive stipends to help defray the costs of schooling. Although public school is available in Nepal, these families face some added difficulty. The children were no longer able to live with the parents in the city due to high costs of living. So most of them are now living with relatives in their villages (family structure in Nepal is very tight so this is pretty common). At this point in time the school systems in many of the villages are in shambles. As my partner described to me: “the schools exist only in name”. Teachers and materials are sparse. The situation has been complicated over recent years due to the maoist insurgency which often targeted educators - many were forced to quit their jobs as teachers or face possible beatings or death. Not a choice anyone should have to make.

Although the inurgency has abated somewhat, the problems still linger and a political solution has not been achieved.

… The bottom line is that we have decided to help defray the cost of sending the children to a private schools in their village. We are also working on procuring computers to setup a lab. The money we provide will help with the costs which they would otherwise not be able to afford.

Reality check: The reason this took me over a year to settle on is because I am a skeptical scientist by nature and wanted to be sure we setup something that would work. At first I felt that it is not neccessary for us to pay for private school when they can get an education at public school at no cost.  The more I learned the more I realized the imperitive of acting in a way that aligned with the parents wishes for their children. They are right, if the schools suck, why should they send them there?! Kudos to these parents, most of whom do not have a formal education for seeking something better for their children!! I guarantee everyone reading this post wants the same for their children. In the end, its the only thing that matters in this world and the one thing we can directly affect, without question. It’s a small contribution, but one that is essential, I think. These are people that make my livlihood possible and take great pride in their work and families.

I sent funds ($1350) in advance for the first year of schooling. I am committing to these children for 3 years at a time. Every 3 years they can re-apply.  You can contribute on this page. Any contributions to this fund are matched by my company. The more we get the more children we can sponsor and we will be adding regular updates about the children.

Catalog Feature Enhanced - Online & Customizable!

March 6, 2008 – 11:26 am

I have spent the better part of 3 days improving our custom catalog feature. Only about 25% of my customers have utilized the catalog - to illustrate the potential of the catalog in terms of its ability to generate new sales, I posted a sample which I created in about 5 minutes on the site.

 See sample Catalog

You can customize the catalog with ANYTHING we have in stock on our site and print it out on your very own printer. Or a better option is to simply save the file to a CD and bring it (or email) the document to Kinkos or Staples and have professionally printed. The catalog now shows much larger photos and also has an inventory list to enable you to take pre-orders and quickly and easily put your order into our website for delivery the next business day.
Let me know what you think. Also, if you have not visited the site for a while we have TONS of new stuff - some unique plain silver items, matching sets, and new small pendants ($6-$7). Also lowered the price of the gem chip bracelets significantly. I am stocking up on low to mid-price items because I know its tough out there these days and doing my best to keep prices down with the increasing world market price of silver.

To make your own catalog, Log In Here. There is an option to have your passw emailed to you… and if you still have trouble give me a holler and I will get it for you personally :) The catalog link is on the left of the admin page.

  Thanks again for your business!

My Kids Learn To Ski!

March 4, 2008 – 12:19 pm

Gemstone Chip Bracelet 5-Packs Reduced To $4.99

February 28, 2008 – 5:29 pm

I am always looking for ways to save you money! I recognize that the increase in silver prices is detrimental to the business of my customers, so I am diversifying in the lower end categories to compensate. I just lowered the price of the 5-packs of gemstone chip bracelets to $4.99. The previous price was $5. These typically retail for $3-$5 each. I also added some new stones including rhodochrosite, lapis and agate.

Low price items Now in New Arrivals

February 27, 2008 – 7:46 pm

I almost went into shock this morning when I saw the price of silver is over $19/ ounce! You are going to see most wholesalers raising their prices soon. But I want to alert you to an opportunity at wholesalegemshop.com. Much of my inventory, however, was purchased when silver was $13-$16. This presents a chance for me to do something nice for my customers - not raise prices! I have posted most of the best values on the site on our New Arrivals Page. Keep in mind that as I add new items to the site, which I have crafted at current silver rates, even my prices will have to go up, albeit slightly. So check out this page for some great deals, which include many of our best-sellers.
